Hugo Picard’s return to France comes with a different opportunity.
Hugo Picard arrived in Columbus from French football.
Now he's going back.
But the circumstances are different.
The Columbus Crew have loaned the U22 Initiative midfielder to Troyes through the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, with the French club holding an option to purchase him.
From Guingamp to Columbus
Picard joined Columbus from Guingamp and went on to record six goals and two assists across 33 appearances.
Now his development takes another turn.
Rather than viewing the move simply as a player returning home, there is a more interesting question: what player is returning?
Picard has experienced another league, another football culture and another tactical environment since leaving France.
MLS as part of the pathway
For years, the conversation around MLS and Europe focused largely on whether young American players could use the league as a stepping stone overseas.
The pathways are becoming less predictable.
Players can move in both directions, develop and then move again when the right opportunity appears.
Picard's next chapter will provide another small test of that idea.
If his time in Columbus helps him establish himself at a higher level back in France, then MLS will have been part of the development journey rather than the destination.
